Some snakey love, just in time for Valentine's Day. Double R (male blacktail rattlesnake) spent a couple weeks courting Porter (female) in summer 2013.

Carol, rock rattlesnake, finally finds her lizard meal! Typically, snakes swallow their prey all the way down to the stomach (about 1/3 down her body) before taking off. But Carol was not going to wait that long – she was out of there, out and around the garage as she finished muscling the little lizard down.

Rattlesnakes often hunt by waiting in ambush for a potential meal to walk by, then striking and immediately releasing their prey. The prey staggers off to die and rattlesnakes use their keen sense of smell to find their meal (scent-trailing).

Rattlesnakes take care of their babies.

Yep, they really do. But, what does “care” look like in a snake? Do they feed their young like a mother bird? Do they keep them warm? Do they protect them from predators? With the exception of feeding, rattlesnakes care for their offspring in familiar ways. This is a timelapse video (taken at 1 minute intervals) that illustrates a typical day for a new rattlesnake family. The large, black snake is Cap Mama, a female Arizona black rattlesnake that gestated with four other females and gave birth in late August to seven neonates. This video was taken when the neonates are just two or three days old.
