Patellofemoral Pain - Knee Cap Pain, Knee Swelling and Aching

"Patellafemoral"! That's a big word. Broken down, it is a simple combination of two words: Patella and Femoral. Thus, it is pain located between the patella and the femur. These two bones come together to form a joint where irritation can occur in a place we commonly recognize as the knee cap or right below it.

In most cases, pain in this region is described as a dull ache caused by swelling.

For many people, pain and swelling in the knee cap is caused by overuse and/or weakness in the quads. Perhaps you just took up lifting weights or started a bootcamp, or you are an avid runner.

We like to take a look at how your hip and knee and foot are working together and whether there is any biomechanical dysfunction between them. We find it important to take holistic approach because pain may localize in an area, but that does not mean that area is the direct source!

One of the worst things is to have your doctor tell you that you can't do something or you have to take a break until pain goes away. In combination with an assessment, we also have a variety of modalities to help speed of the process to a great degree to get you back to the things you love to do.
